Filed Under, &The Power Rangers have come a long way to finally hit the big screen in English. The United States’ first introduction to the Rangers came in the form of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a kids’ TV show which ran from 1993 to 1996.
The show garnered a cult following, not only surrounding the original characters, but also the actors who portrayed them. As audiences gear up for, which premieres March 24, it’s impossible not to think back to the OG Rangers and wonder what they’re doing. Many of the Rangers — originally portrayed by Austin St. John, Walter Jones, Amy Jo Johnson, David Yost, Thuy Trang, and Jason David Frank — went on to portray their characters again beyond the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series in which they first starred. John: Jason Lee Scott, Red RangerAustin St. John played Jason, the Red Ranger and de facto leader of the Power Rangers, in more than just Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. In 1996, Jason stepped in to take on the powers of the Gold Ranger in Power Rangers: Zeo and then returned as Jason in the 1997 movie Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.
John portrayed Jason one more time in 2002 for an episode of Power Rangers: Wild Force: “Forever Red.”St. John gave up acting for a while to work on his martial arts, train as a firefighter, and work as an EMT paramedic. He’ll return to acting in the near future with the upcoming short film The Order, which he’ll co-star in with former Black Ranger Walter Jones and former Blue Ranger David Yost. Walter Jones: Zack Taylor, Black RangerThe group’s light-hearted prankster, Zack, the Black Ranger, was played by Walter Jones.
Despite never appearing as a full-on Ranger again after Mighty Morphin, Jones did voice acting for two separate characters in later seasons, where he was in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy as the monster, Nightmare, and in the Wild Force episode “Forever Red” as the Machine Empire general, Gerrok.Jones is currently still acting and lives in Los Angeles. Most of his better-known work is in voice acting ( Open Season 2, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2), though he did make an appearance in the Lonely Island’s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and will co-star with Austin St. John and David Yost in the upcoming short film The Order. Amy Jo Johnson: Kimberly Ann Hart, Pink RangerThe former Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson, the valley girl who defied expectations, has probably continued a successful career behind the scenes. After reprising her role as the Pink Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, Johnson has gone on to have roles in Flashpoint, Felicity, and Covert Affairs. She’s almost moved into filmmaking and directed both 2016’s short film Lines and the upcoming The Space Between (which she also wrote). David Yost: Billy Cranston, Blue RangerDavid Yost’s Billy was the only Ranger to portray his character throughout the entire Mighty Morphin series and subsequently returned to portray Billy once again in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Power Rangers: Zeo. Billy was often referred to as the brains of the operation, hence the glasses.Yost is still acting, working the convention circuit, and will co-star in The Order with Austin St.
John and Walter Jones. Thuy Trang: Trini Kwan, Yellow RangerThuy Trang, who portrayed Trini Kwan’s Yellow Ranger, was portrayed as the nice one of the group.
Trang played Trini for one and a half season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and later picked up a role as the villain in 1996’s The Crow: City of Angels. In 2001, Trang died in a car accident. Most of her former cast members attended her funeral. Jason David Frank, Tommy Oliver, Green/White RangerJason David Frank’s Tommy Oliver was often considered a legend in the Power Rangers community. Tommy took control of the Rangers from Jason in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Frank later made appearances as Tommy in the Zeo, Turbo, and Dino Thunder series and had a guest spot on Power Rangers Super Megaforce. While Frank is still quite involved with the legacy of the Green Ranger, even expressing a solo movie interest to Stan Lee at one point, Frank has gone on to find relative fame as a professional MMA fighter, putting his Rangers training to IRL use.
